Very good plus dry red wine with blackberry and ripe black cherries over a mix of pencil box, dried herbs and baking spice. The medium plus tannins are very ripe and bring balance to the high fruit concentration and medium plus acidity. This wine will easily age for 10 years and improve over that time.
Very good dry red wine with mixed black and red berries over mocha, white pepper and vanilla. The fruit has medium plus concentration and leads to a long finish. The medium tannins are very ripe and well integrated. Drink now and for 7-8 years, will improve in cellar for 2-3 years.
Very good minus dry red wine with ripe plum and black cherries over sweet baking spice. The medium tannins are ripe and rounded balancing the medium acidity. The wine is structured and has a medium plus ripe fruit finish. Drink now and for 3-4 years.
These wines where supplied by the wineries through Wines of Chile for a group of wine professionals in Vancouver Canada, Sept 25th 2014. The theme of the event was verticals of several age worthy red Chilean wines. The wines were all age worthy, several were not showing vintages with many years spread between them. The Koyle Family Vineyard wines were the 1st and 2nd vintage of its new Icon wine Auma, while the Coyam by Vinedos Emiliana were a 2001 and a 2010 showing a broad spread in years. Another point is vintage variation, Chile has very consistent weather year to year but weather can be a factor, it was good the have a winemaker/viticulturist like Sr. Undurraga on hand to speak to this point.
The overall impression of this reviewer is premium Chilean red wines can easily age for 8-12 years and hold their fruit longer and than comparably priced wines from Bordeaux or Napa.
The tasting was lead by Rhys Pender MW and Cristobal Undurraga from Koyle who did a great job of leading us through the wines and answering our sometimes complex questions.

2009, Black and bright red cherry with raspberries over baking spice, medium plus acidity and medium minus soft tannins. Not showing much age will hold for another 9-12 years.
2012, Black fruit over forest floor and touch of sweet fresh herbs, medium minus acidity and silky medium minus tannins. Will evolve to more earthiness and drink for 6-7 years but not live as long as the 2009.
Coyam by Vinedos Emiliana
2001, black fruit and strong floral notes over touch of bright red current, medium minus acidity and medium minus mature rounded tannins, long sweet finish, will continue aging well for 3-4 years and drink well for 10.
2010, bright red fruit and baking spice with the same floral notes of the 2001, the medium plus acidity and medium plus tannins gives the wine great structure to age for 10-12 years. The wine should age well and longer than the 2001.
Auma by Koyle Family Vineyards
2009, sweet red and black fruit over floral notes and sweet garden herbs, the wine has a strong mineral note, the medium ripe tannins and medium acidity lead to a long finish, the wine has very good structure and will age for 8-10 years. This wine is lead by the Malbec bringing soft black fruit.
2010, ripe black and red fruit with pepper, mineral notes and forest notes, medium plus acidity and medium plus grippy tannins lead to a medium plus finish, will age well for 12-14 years. This wine is lead by Cabernet Sauvignon which brings more structure.
Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon
2006, ripe red current and back raspberries over nice cigar box notes, the acidity and tannins are both medium minus and well balanced, very clean structured wine with medium plus fruit intensity and another 5-6 years to enjoy it.
2011, Bright red fruit with brooding black current over baking spices, tobacco and a mineral note. The ripe medium plus tannins and medium acidity bring balance and the structure to age for 10+ years.
Don Maximiano by Vina Errazuris
2009, big black current and ripe black raspberries over complex baking spice and dried herbs, medium plus ripe tannins and medium acidity lead to a long rich finish. The wine finishes very clean with notes of minerals and oak. The wine has 8-9 more years of enjoyment.
2011, pure black fruit with floral and sweet garden herbs, the medium acidity and medium round tannins lead to clean long finish. The wine shows its oak on the palate more than the nose and will drink for 10-12 years.
Very good minus dry red wine with mixed red and ripe black fruit over sweet figs and mocha. The medium minus tannins are ripe and round balancing the medium acidity giving a medium plus finish. The wine has good complexity. Drink now and for 4-5 years.
